LXVI

I won’t say the name, but it is in every star that opens and every rose that dies.

I won’t say the name, but the meadowlark says it when he greets the dawn and the nightingale says it when he bids the night farewell.

I won’t say it, but if I said it, there would be a fluttering of nightingales in my chest and a flavor of stars in my mouth and there would be new roses in the world.

I won’t say it, but in this world of ours, there is not one joy, not one sweetness, not one desire, hope, or grief that does not go by this name. If it is not called this name, it is not worthy of being called anything.

And I call to nothing, I name nothing, and nothing responds to the name that is never spoken, the name that never passes through my lips the way the immensity of the sea never passes through the grain of sand that clings to the beach.
